Estyria sensory panel
The best
pumpkin seed oil
Estyria’s Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI has won more awards than any other pumpkin seed oil.
Crucial to its consistently high quality is the work of the sensory panel, which meets each week.
Pumpkin seed oil from Estyria is tested in two stages before being released for bottling: it must pass an analytical test and then a sensory assessment.
Nine people from different departments meet in the quality assurance laboratory each Wednesday to taste the latest batches.
They evaluate the pumpkin seed oils on the basis of the following criteria:
- consistency
- taste
- smell
- colour
The tasters, who are trained to look for faults, consider the three typical parameters used to judge pumpkin seed oil:
- roasted note combined with the seed tone (nutty flavour)
- freshness of the pumpkin seed oil
- purity
If the oil does not meet the required sensory standards, its quality is downgraded.
As well as tasting the pumpkin seed oil produced in-house, we also regularly perform ranking tests in which various oils from our competitors are assessed. This enable the samples to be ranked on a popularity scale.
Thanks to the thorough work of our pumpkin seed oil testers, Estyria has won more than 30 awards that highlight the premium quality of our product.
In 2019 we were named Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil Champion 2019 and were awarded the State Prize 2019, Gault Millau 2019 and DLG Gold 2019 for conventional and organic quality.

Traditional Styrian
stamp press process
While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
