Estyria sustainability targets – part 2
bee happy – Steirerkraft helps wild bees
In keeping with our agricultural roots, we are taking steps to tackle the huge decline in insects.
In collaboration with the Austrian League for Nature Conservation Naturschutzbund Österreich, we are acting on two fronts.
On the one hand we support the protection of wild bees through informative meetings for our contracted farmers and free seed packages to create wild flower strips near their agricultural land.
On the other hand general awareness-raising work is being pursued through the bee happy project. The aim is to create lots of flower strips and nesting aids in people’s gardens and on private land. With the Styrian Department of Education and the Austrian League for Nature Conservation we have produced a picture book that brings the importance of insects home to our little ones in an entertaining way. And schoolchildren and their teachers will be creating a big area of flowering plants. In addition, we are using the hangers on our Styrian pumpkin seed oil bottles to launch a major lottery, with wild-bee-friendly nesting aids and visits to our “bee happy” show garden to be won.

Traditional Styrian
stamp press process
While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
