Steirerkraft delights at height

With the breathtaking panorama over the Planai in Schladming, what could be more inviting than a enjoyable day at the Schafalm. Chef Reinhard Ries treats his guests in the Alm restaurant to wonderful dishes – produced from only the best ingredients.

The Planai is a mountain full of culinary delights, with a superb view of the Dachstein. The Schafalm is a member of the “Genuss-Specht-Wirt” association, standing for top quality and a passion for good food. For the owners Reinhard and Heinz Schütter this means including some Steirerkraft. For many years they have used pumpkin seed oil, pumpkin seeds, scarlet runner beans, polenta and vinegar from Steirerkraft in their delicious dishes.

Whether in winter or summer, there is always something happening at the Schafalm – the night race on the Planai and the winter barbecues with Johann Lafer draw countless visitors to the lofty heights every year. And to ensure that all these events run as if “well-oiled”, some Steirerkraft pumpkin seed oil PGI is always to hand.

Traditional Styrian
stamp press process

While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
