Prospects for the 2020 apple harvest

Below average

The favourable weather conditions to date in the EU area were marred by late frost in important growing regions including Hungary, Poland, Italy and also Austria. In addition, Hungary is suffering from drought, which will lead to poorer yields. The coming harvest is therefore expected to yield very varying quantities in different countries.

In Austria we are predicting that yields will be down by about 30% on a normal year. There will be big fluctuations within the individual regions. For example, Lower Austria has been more severely affected by frost than Styria.

The harvest will also include more small-calibre apples. The reasons for this are an insufficiently wet winter, dryness in early spring and small fruits from the second flowering as a result of the late frosts. A higher proportion of the fruit is also likely to show signs of frost damage such as frost rings and russeting.

As usual, stable pricing terms will be available at the end of the summer.

Traditional Styrian
stamp press process

While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
