Investing in the future

Styrian “super pumpkin” ensures quality and supply

Domestic agriculture is facing major challenges: heat waves, heavy rainfall, and prolonged dry spells are increasingly affecting oil pumpkin cultivation. To ensure yields and quality in the future, we at ALWERA Group are consistently focusing on research and development.

Together with Saatzucht Gleisdorf, we have been working on more robust varieties for years. We are proud of our latest success: promising early varieties have been harvested on trial fields near our site in Wollsdorf. These “super pumpkins” ripen up to two weeks earlier, deliver stable yields, and are better adapted to extreme weather conditions. This opens up new possibilities –  for example, for cultivation in cooler regions such as Upper Styria – and significantly extends the harvest window.

As early as next year, our approximately 1.000 contract farmers will be able to benefit from these new hybrid varieties. Our goal is to ensure security of supply while maintaining the highest quality standards.

The development process is complex and requires years of testing, careful crossbreeding, and close observation on large trial fields. But the effort is worth it: with each step, the oil pumpkin becomes more resistant and productive, remaining a reliable raw material for our high-quality pumpkin seed product – even under the conditions of climate change.

Traditional Styrian
stamp press process

While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
