GWS market report
China and international trade

The globalisation trap

The pumpkin seed market is desperately hoping for good harvests around the world. Loco reserves are slowly dwindling, and in many cases there will be some difficulties in maintaining supplies through to the new harvest. However, the situation out in the fields varies widely. In China, the expected GWS pumpkin harvest remains on target at 10-12,000 tonnes, a similar amount to previous years. However, the yield for the Shine Skin variety will be lower due to decreased cultivation. The 2020 harvest is practically sold out.

The Chinese market is increasingly struggling, due to astronomical freight costs in Asia and particularly in China. Freight costs are thus impacting raw material prices more than ever before and have increased the final price by nearly 15%. The situation for organic GWS China is particularly difficult too.

Traditional Styrian
stamp press process

While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
