Chinese harvest 2020

Xinjiang – a region at the centre of attention

The world’s greatest human rights abuse is currently taking place in the autonomous region of Xinjiang in north-west China. At the same time, the region is the most important growing area for GWS seeds in China. On the basis of fabricated evidence and blackmailed denunciations as “spies” or “enemies of China”, members of Muslim minorities – mainly Uighurs and Kazakhs – are being interned in punishment camps, tortured and “re-educated” to make them submissive supporters of the Communist government.

Many farmers who belong to one of these ethnic minorities are also involved in growing GWS pumpkin seeds. Not many market participants know about this or are aware of this fact. Even Chinese citizens know virtually nothing about it or are badly or incorrectly informed.

Through one of our own employees who is permanently in the area, we keep a close eye on our suppliers. If you would like to know more about the import markets, ask your Estyria Key Account Manager for a copy of our brand-new Estyria Pumpkin Seed Report 2020.

Traditional Styrian
stamp press process

While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
