Apple Harvest 2019

EU apple harvest will shrink significantly this year

Contradicting the forecasts at apple blossom time, the harvest situation this year is set to be worse than expected.

Frost, hail and drought have decimated this year’s European apple harvest, which is expected to fall to around 10.5 million tonnes – some 20% less than last year’s excellent crop. Poland has been particularly hard hit: a reduction of around 44% in the quantity of Polish apples is likely this year. In the remaining EU countries such as Italy and Austria, harvests are slightly below average. Slight increases are expected in France, and in Germany both quality and quantity vary widely between regions. All growing districts have one thing in common this year: as a result of the spells of heat and drought, more undersized fruit are expected. This will affect final harvest quantities and prices. We foresee higher prices for raw goods in both the conventional and the organic sector.

Traditional Styrian
stamp press process

While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
