25 years of Steirerkraft

Styrian original celebrating its jubilee

Steirerkraft has grown from a small oil press to market leader in the pumpkin seed oil sector. Now it’s celebrating with special events, a jubilee quiz and exclusive designer T-shirts that are destined for cult status.

First registered as a company on 21st June 1996, Steirerkraft has grown from strength to strength. “Back in the day, we were thrilled if our daily takings topped 500 Austrian schillings,” reminisces former CEO Franz Seidl. Today, Steirerkraft is the number one company for pumpkin seed oil and GWS pumpkin seeds – and can look back proudly over 25 eventful years. It’s now celebrating its jubilee with a prize competition that you can enter on steirerkraft.com.

Styrian original with big benefits

Steirerkraft has been adding the finishing touches to local cuisine for more than two decades. Thanks to its impeccable quality, meticulous processing methods and its focus on regional produce, it’s also gained a fine reputation far beyond the borders of Styria. To create this Styrian speciality, the company combines state-of-the-art technology with traditional food processing methods. As in the past, a traditional stamp press is still used to gently extract the award-winning Styrian pumpkin seed oil.
The company also focuses on values, remaining staunchly loyal to its Styrian origins and its goal of creating delicious, natural foods for a balanced, regional diet. Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI is rich in vitamin E and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Styrian pumpkin seeds rank fourth on the global list of spermidine-rich foods, and Styrian scarlet runner beans PDO contain impressive amounts of protein and fibre.
When it comes to sustainability, we take a planet-friendly approach to people, animals and plants – and we practice what we preach. For example, Steirerkraft’s contract farmers plant wildflower corridors to attract wild bees that can pollinate up to 1000 hectares of farmland, while Steirerkraft’s Kernothek shop near St. Ruprecht an der Raab sells a wide range of loose products.

A quarter century of gourmet delights

Haute cuisine brings two worlds together – gourmet chefs enjoy using high quality Steirerkraft products, while Steirerkraft enjoys actively supporting high-end gastronomy in Styria. Every year, for example, we join forces with the tourism school and college in Bad Gleichenberg and elect a “Steirerkraft recipe rocker” to create innovative new recipes. Fans include Eveline Wild, world champion pastry chef, and star chef Stefan Eder from WILDen EDER restaurant in St. Kathrein am Offenegg. Now that the COVID lockdown is finally over, both look forward to welcoming guests again, according to a recent article in a local newspaper (Kleine Zeitung, 26th June, “Genuss auf steirisch” supplement for the Styria and Carinthia region, circulation: approx. 265.000). Plenty to celebrate, in other words!

Wearable Styrian positivity

Steirerkraft has plenty up its sleeve to make sure its success story continues for another 25 years! Pumpkin seed oil, for example, can do more than just tickle your taste buds. Now you can even wear it – as a stylish Steirerkraft T-shirt which is destined to achieve veritable cult status. And it looks just as good with lederhosen as it does with your favourite jeans. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Austria’s most popular premium pumpkin seed oil brand, Steirerkraft manufacturer Estyria commissioned the DECASA artist collective to design a creative birthday motif that now adorns the front of our exclusive T-shirts. Explaining the idea behind their work, artist Carola Deutsch and graphic designer Sabrina Deutsch, two sisters from Graz, tell us: “We condensed the essence of Styria into a colourful work of art.”

Win a must-have T-shirt or a spa holiday!

Up for grabs alongside the T-shirts are Styrian jubilee edition hampers and free tours of the Steirerkraft Kernothek store. Traditional Styrian
stamp press process

While modernity has brought progress in many areas, the traditional Styrian stamp press process is still the best way of making pumpkin seed oil. The main difference between this and other pressing methods is that we work with open roasting pans. At our plant, people check when the pumpkin seeds are perfectly roasted and so will yield the very best oil. This enables our experienced oil millers to produce the pumpkin seed oil that has won more prizes than any other – and which as a result of this type of pressing retains all the natural constituents. The untreated oil is not filtered; the particles that make it cloudy settle naturally when the oil is left to rest.
